Welfare Recipients In This State Just Received Some Horrifying News… The Party Is Over

At the beginning of this year, several thousand welfare applicants in North Carolina were screened for drugs as part of an effort to stop welfare abuse. Of those screened, 89 were ordered to take a drug test. 21 of them tested positive and were barred from the receiving benefits from the state.

An additional 70 applicants never showed up for their appointment and forfeited their opportunity to receive benefits.

The results of this program are truly shocking. Of 7,600 welfare applicants, 2% were referred for drug testing, and a quarter of those failed.

Now, the state has decided all welfare recipients must be tested for drugs. The law requiring drug testing of Work First recipients suspected of drug use was signed into law three years ago, despite a controversial veto from Republican Governor Pat McCrory.

While controversial, the new requirement helps to protect the integrity of a system designed to help low-income families survive. This is meant to help children who don’t get enough to eat—not drug addicts who have chosen not to work. Children of drug addicts are still protected through the system.

Critics of the measure have argued this program is a waste of money, but supporters acknowledge this measure is a push in the right direction: the government will only help you if you choose to help yourself.
