Dubai: A rare watch, which was made for the Sultanate of Oman in 1978, will be featured at an upcoming Dubai Important Watches auction to be held on October 19.
The Patek Philippe wristwatch is priced between OMR57,000 and OMR96,000. It is distinguished by the national emblem of Oman, the Khanjar (dagger) in a sheath, which is superimposed upon two crossed swords.
The prestigious watch is one of the only two confirmed examples of the “Nautilus” model in stainless steel made on special order for the Royal household.
According to a press release by leading auction house Christie’s, there were no official watch agents in Oman in 1978 and so almost all of the watches made by various brands with “Khanjar” dials were supplied through the ultra high-end retailer Asprey of New Bond Street in London and occasionally through their Geneva branch.
“The Nautilus is now one of the most desired and sought-after collectors’ watches,” said the release.
The Autumn Dubai sale season will mark the 40th anniversary of the famous Nautilus model by Patek Philippe on October 19 at the Jumeirah Towers Hotel, followed by auctions in Geneva, Hong Kong and New York.
The auction will offer 146 lots with a pre-sale estimate of around $4.5 million.
Of the 146 watches on offer 40 per cent are vintage timepieces and 60 per cent are modern watches, the press release stated.
Along with the 146 auction lots, Christie’s will once more showcase important highlights of the November Geneva watch auction, underlining the growing interest into a wider range of vintage watches and highly sought after collector pieces. The preview, opening on October 15 and running until Wednesday, October 19, the day of the sale, will therefore be an El Dorado for all watch enthusiasts coming to town.
Christie’s has announced its continuous support and partnership for the second edition of the Dubai Watch Week taking place from November 15 to 19.
