Rallying for tourism

Sep 7, 2016- The Rotary Club of Bagmati Kathmandu, in association with The Kathmandu Post, is organising a rally, titled The Amazing Motor Rally Kathmandu-Pokhara 2016, on September 11, organisers announced during a press meet held in the Capital on Tuesday. The rally marks the Rotary Foundation’s centennial, and also aims to promote the tourism initiative taken by the Nepal government—Ghumphir 2073. This is the third iteration of the event, spearheaded by the Motor Rally Kathmandu.

The rally will begin from Park Village Resort, Budhanilkantha and will come to an end at Waterfront Resort in Pokhara. Rotary’s district governor, Jaya RL Shah, will flag off the rally from Budhanilkantha.

Speaking at the meet, Rama Kandel, club president of Rotary Club of Bagmati Kathmandu, said, “As Rotary Foundation turned 100 this year, clubs all over the world are organising fun-filled events elsewhere… Here in Nepal, with the government’s initiative of promoting tourism kicking off this year, we hope this motor rally would prove to be a fantastic opportunity for us to promote our country and its tourism sector.” The club will also distribute stationery in Damauli and will host a free dental check-up at Sarangkot as part of the event.

“We are excitedly looking forward to the event. Our last rally, held two years ago, was themed ‘anti-tobacco’ and all the vehicles were decorated to mark that; in a similar fashion, this year’s event will be all about promoting tourism,” shared Diwakar Rajkarnikar, committee chair of the Motor Rally Nepal.

He also mentioned that in order to ensure safety of the participants, the organisers will place marshalls at eight different locations—Park Village Resort, Tribhuvan Park, Nagdhunga, Malekhu, Kurintar, Damauli, Amar Singh Chowk, and Water Front Resort in Pokhara. Rajkarnikar informed that as a safety measure the participants reaching the destination the earliest will have two points deducted.

The top three winners at the rally will receive two tickets each from Qatar Airways, Thai Airways, and Nepal Airlines, respectively. The organisers expect about 40 to 45 contestants to take part in the one-day event. The registration fee for both the driver and navigator is Rs 12,000.
