Journos’ minimum wage: Media operators express concern

Sep 10, 2016- The media fraternity has taken exception to a joint statement issued by the Directive Committee and the Monitoring Subcommittee formed by the Ministry

of Information and Communications regarding implementation of the minimum salary set for journalists and employees working in media organisations.

The committee and the subcommittee formed by a Cabinet decision had issued the statement calling for implementation of the government decision without consulting with the media sector.

The Media Society Nepal, the Broadcasting Association of Nepal, and the Community Radio Broadcasting Association on Friday objected to the statement and the letters issued on Sunday saying that they were released without their consent.

The three organisations of print media, electronic media and community radios also expressed dissatisfaction at the formation of the minimum wage implementation committee by the former government “without including any of us stakeholders” as per the Working Journalists’ Act-1993.

“We would also like to draw attention of the government that none of our organisations can be involved in the committee formed without our consent,” read the statement.

Media Society Nepal and the media houses had already informed Prime Minister Puspha Kamal Dahal, Communications Minister Surendra Kumar Karki and former Minister Sherdhan Rai both verbally and in writing that the media houses were going through a difficult time as a result of the earthquakes last year and the subsequent border blockade.

They had communicated that the minimum wage fixed by the government cannot be implemented unless the demands of the media houses are fulfilled.

As per the decision of the Council of Ministers, journalists will be entitled to a minimum monthly salary of Rs19,500.
