Your Favorite Candy Is No Longer Being Produced After It’s Deemed Racist

According to recent reports, the candy company Haribo was recently forced to stop selling a type of gummies after social media users deemed the candy “racist.”

“Multiculturalism, colonial legacy, or the slave trade?” wrote one Danish Twitter user, Saam Kapadia. “The Haribo Skipper Mix makes me think about Denmark and my Danish heritage.”

In response, Haribo released a statement defending their black licorice faces. The company steadfastly ignored any negative connotation or racial intent behind the criticism. Still, they gave in to the pressures of consumers.

“We decided that we could keep the product while removing the parts that certain customers found offensive,” claims Ola Dagliden, head of Haribo Sweden.

On Friday, Haribo removed a picture of the product from their website. The black licorice faces have also been removed from the mix, which is sol in Sweden.

What do you think of controversy? Is it possible for a candy to be racist?
